ChatGPT alternatives for writing and research

The useful question is not “which assistant wins?” It is “which one helps me finish this task with less checking and rework?” Claude, Gemini and Perplexity are alternatives worth evaluating against a specific writing or research brief.

This is an editorial selection guide, not a hands-on benchmark. LLMinONE links to official services; it does not host these assistants, connect your accounts or include their subscriptions.

A comparison you can run yourself

Use a short, non-sensitive sample and the same instructions in each service. For writing, try:

“Edit this draft for a general audience. Preserve every factual claim and number. Flag unsupported statements instead of adding evidence. Return the revised draft and a short list of substantive changes.”

Check the output against the original: did it change a number, strengthen an uncertain claim or remove an important qualification? Count the corrections you would need to make before using it. These are suggested evaluation steps, not results from testing these products.

For research, define the question and date range, request primary sources, then open each link. The Perplexity versus ChatGPT research guide provides a source-checking checklist.
